Children's Ministry Backdrops That You Can Repurpose!
We know that while Children's Ministry is one of the biggest reasons that families choose to join a church, it's also one of the areas that has to be the most creative with available resources.
Your kids ministry backdrops not only change the way that your classroom feels, but also can play a factor in your online broadcast, mid-week devotion videos, and how your guests feel when they are experiencing your Sunday service.
Here are some of the most creative ways the churches we've worked with have repurposed their children's ministry backdrops.
There are 2 factors that affect your Children's Ministry Backdrops: Design and Material
Children's Ministry Backdrop Material:
Many people want to start their backdrop search by checking out our Children's Ministry catalog of designs.
It's not a surprise that you want to look for design inspiration, but first, let's figure out the necessary material you need for your backdrop banner.
If your backdrop banner will be something that you'll use both inside and outside, then you'll want to be sure you're choosing a material like vinyl to withstand the elements like unexpected rain or long hours of sunshine.
While vinyl will work well to withstand the weather as it holds onto its colors and won't absorb water, it may not be the best material for an indoor application with bright lights on video since it can be reflective and can cause unintended bright spots to your camera.
A common indoor fabric recommendation is the polyester used on our tension displays.
Because the tension displays are tensioned tight (as you may have guessed by the name) you won't see any movement on video when the HVAC turns on distracting your kids in the middle of Sunday school.
Tension display polyester also allows for bright and vivid colors, giving your stage an instant pop of color when kids walk into your class, but they're not reflective, so bright fluorescent or stage lights enhance the color rather than creating reflections on video.
Will your backdrop be stationary or portable?
How necessary is it for your backdrop to be portable?
Will you need something that's frame can be easily packed away, or will your banner be stationary and in place permanently throughout the week?
Do you need a carrying case for your backdrop to be transported in a vehicle to storage between Sundays, or is that not necessary?

Single or Multiple Backdrops for your Kids Ministry?
You may also consider a few roll-up banners placed around your stage might be a better fit for your space and design than a single backdrop banner in the middle of your stage.
While both a single fabric backdrop or multiple backdrop designs will provide a great-looking background in person and on camera, you may find your children are more engaged when the stage area fills more of their field of view by multiple wider pieces than a single design piece in the middle.
If you're not sure which material or layout may be a fit, our design team is happy to chat or take your call and give a recommendation based on the thousands of backdrops we've designed and shipped for kids ministries and shipped across America.
Children's Ministry Backdrop Design Ideas:
You need to make your custom design last as long as possible and function in as many different ways as possible, so here are a few tips:
1) We've already said it, but it bears repeating: Choose the best material that will suit your needs. Finding out that your background is really reflective on camera or that your outdoor stage got hit by a surprise rainstorm in the middle of VBS, or blew over the fence in that gust of wind is a surefire way to have to 'rethink' that new backdrop.
2) Many of our backdrop materials can be printed on both sides. (Yes! Double-sided!) Print this current series on one side, and the next series on the other allowing you to double the length of time you'll be using this backdrop by turning the frame around.
3) Gradually build a library of backdrops. If you're doing a jungle theme, consider only printing jungle leaves, trees, and animals on this backdrop, and leave off things that would identify this series like the specific title, date, or bible verse.
Next time you have a jungle theme, you'll have a backdrop ready to go (or a second backdrop so you can make your stage design twice as wide!)
4) Create a "generic" kids ministry backdrop custom design. A banner style that matches your room colors, or compliments your logo color can go a long way and be very versatile with your logo in the middle.
Imagine an 8x8 tension banner with your logo in the middle;
Need a jungle theme? Bring in some house plants (or fake plants from the church basement) and hang stuffed animals around your banner to create a jungle theme.
Need a "movie set" theme? Bring in some fancy can lights, and throw an old reel of film over each corner of that same backdrop with a couple of directors' chairs, and now that same backdrop feels like it's movie-themed.
