Signage and Banner Ideas for Churches
Most Church banners fall into 1 of 5 basic categories; express ideas, enhance environments, give wayfinding directions, attract attention, and provide information.
Each banner, sign, and design serves a specific purpose. We'll highlight these different purposes with some real banner and signage examples that we've printed for our church banners clients all across America.
5 Purposes (or Categories) of Church Banners and Signage:
Purpose 1: Banners that Express Ideas
Print "Welcome Home" handheld signs, vinyl light post signs that offer encouragement before people walk into church, mission statement banner designs, and fabric signage in your kids' area that talks about basic truths or this week's lesson are all banners that we can customize to express ideas; the purpose of them is to drive home an encouraging message that you would like your visitor to remember!
Purpose 2: Banners that Enhance Environments
Custom banners can serve to enhance your church environment, in a hallway, in the foyer, an outdoor vinyl sign in the parking lot, or to cover the trophy case in your portable high school church plant. Often these banners are printed with abstract designs and colors or include your church logo, but simply serve the purpose of creating a welcoming and exciting environment at your church.
Purpose 3: Banners that Give Wayfinding Directions
Point the way to your kids' entrance doors, directions to your restrooms or auditoriums in your portable church plant, or give directions to your Youth Room or Bible Study classes during the week.
Wayfinding signage is essential to letting visitors know "It's alright if you don't know your way around," and can help people find their way if they're running a few minutes behind on a Sunday, or attending a midweek class for the first time.
Wayfinding signage often comes with the option to print and design a sign front and back so it can change for multiple purposes. An A-Frame sign for instance can have multiple insert options and can change every day for events at your church. We can make and customize new inserts when you're finished with your current designs.
Purpose 4: Banners that Attract Attention

All of these are examples of church banners and signs that are intended to attract attention. They do provide info, but they're mostly best at catching eyes when hung from the ceiling or mounted on a high wall.
An important aspect of "Attention Attracting" signs at your church is that they need to be hung high enough to be seen above the height of a crowd where someone will notice your church banner before or after service, the art is a design that stands out against their background, and the size is large enough to be easy to see.
One of the most important "Attention" signs your church needs is "Pick Up Kids Here." Guests will probably head straight to pick up their kids after their first time at your service, so clarity wins, especially in a large crowd as service lets out.
Purpose 5: Banners that Provide Information
Let people know about a free upcoming concert, your new church podcast, mid-week youth services, or a new service time with a banner placed in an obvious and easily-seen public location, like an indoor roll-up banner inside your front doors, a vinyl outdoor church banner hanging from the outside of your building, or a fabric banner highlighting your kids classroom theme this month.
